What is Cybernetics?

The word "cybernetics" comes from the Greek term "kybernetes", which means "helmsman".
Cybenetics was defined by Wiener as "the science of control and communication, in the animal and the machine" -- the art of steersmanship.
In 1949, the Austrian physicist Heinz von Foerster suggested to the participants in the Macy conferences that the word cybernetics should be chosen as the name for their new research field and received general approval.
Cybernetics deals with all forms of behaving in so far as they are regular, or determinate, or reproducible. The materiality is irrelevant, and so is the holding or not holding of the ordinary laws of physics. It is possible to simulate laws and then deduce how a system that followed them would behave.
Cybernetics treats any given machine by asking not "what individual act will it produce here and now?", but "what are all the possible behaviors that it can produce?"
Cybernetics offers one set of concepts that, by having exact correspondences with each branch of science, can thereby bring them into exact relation with one another. It is thus likely to reveal a great number of interesting and suggestive parallelisms between machine and brain and society. It can provide a common language by which discoveries in one branch can be readily made use of in the others.
Cybernetics offers a method for the scientific treatment of the system in which complexity is outstanding and too important to be ignored. Cybernetics offers the hope of providing effective methods for the study, and control, of systems that are intrinsically extremely complex.
Cybernetics is also a way of considering and thinking about things that can be used to analyze the thinking, communication, acting and functioning of human beings themselves and to give them an effective meaning. This approach is thus also helpful in overcoming communication problems between different experts and specialist areas.
The science of cybernetics has a lot of impact in our modern life. These include a wide range of mechanical and electronic automata and mechanisms of different types serving a variety of purposes, the invention of the computer, current information theory and the most effective forms of psychotherapy.

Management Cybernetics

Management cybernetics can be defined as the concrete application of natural cybernetic laws and their interactions to all types of organizations and institutions created by human being. The field of management cybernetics was established by Stafford Beer. His management theory is not limited only to industrial and commercial enterprises, it also relates to the management of all types of organizations and institutions in the profit and non-profit sectors: from individual enterprises to huge multinationals in the private and public sector
Management cybernetics is a theory based on natural laws and covering general management issues that every individual who wants to influence an organization in any way must learn to resolve.
Management cybernetics is not limited to the actions of top managers. Every member of an organization that interacts is involved in the considerations.
Organizations and institutions created by human beings encompass all types of living, mechanical and social systems. Whilst management cybernetics focuses in particular on these systems, the fundamental principles of cybernetics can also be applied to the individual components and factors in an interdisciplinary way.
Stafford Beer defines cybernetics as "the science of effective organization".
He himself in his management theories combines cybernetics in particular with his practical experience and knowledge of neuropsychology, neurophysiology, computer science, communications, operations research, mathematics, formal logic and philosophy.

Endo-Management

Endo (Greek 'from inside') means that we are inside an interface - a constructed borderline of our
knowledge. Interfaces as a lens for construction of reality allow us to make an endo-/exo-Cut between
the knowledge of a network or a participant and the outside world. Exo (Greek 'outside') means that we
are outside of this interface. For example, if you have a Submarine team, the people which are in the
submarine are "endo", and the rest of the world is "exo". Cyberspace is virtual and endo to the physical
world.
The Internet does not follow the same causal logic
as some of the exo-worlds do. Which leads to non-linear dynamics and chaotic patterns of events. Yet,
one thing should be kept in mind: Endo-worlds and exo-worlds are not two clearly distinguishable; they
are more like a seamless meta-interface itself.
The evolution of knowledge cannot be left alone, it has to be managed in a new, creative way. Interfaces
tend to be anarchic and chaotic without effective management. Therefore, interface management or
endo-management requires to understand the complexity of interfaces to be able to influence them. It is
not through reducing the complexity, but by understanding the complexity, that we will have a chance to
make a difference.
The management of interfaces is strongly depending on interactive feedback loops which can either lead
to self-organization or creative destruction (J.A. Schumpeter). As described, interfaces have the
tendency to self-destruct. So, existing management principles directed toward sustenance and status quo
cannot be applied adequately. Positive feedback is essential for the complexity of self-organized
processes and deterministic chaos. For example, small and medium-sized firms have new
chances to reach huge numbers of networks knots through positive feedback.
Therefore, economy of scale is not the important factor in an interface economy, but economy of simulation - the efficiency of
software and the flexible use of hyperlinks.
In interfaces power is broadly distributed. Because of the
intensive feedback loops from and to the interface, every person can be the reason for massive change. In the following book you will find more information:
